Manager Micky Adams was not a happy man at full time following another home defeat against Chesterfield yesterday.
The opposition took the early lead inside of the first ten minutes, and Vale had to battle back to level the scores just before the half time break. However parity didn’t last long as we let them in again way too quickly for the manager’s liking as we’ve now lost our third game on home soil in eight days.
Speaking to the Stoke Sentinel following the full time whistle the gaffer explained.
‘We are disappointed again, it has been a bad week. Three defeats on the bounce is never easy – it’s never nice for our supporters that is for sure. I am bitterly disappointed with the way we defended for both goals, we keep giving teams lifts. We have chased the last three games really and it’s not been good enough.’
Adams goes on to say that the major disappointment is that up front we are showing signs of what we can do, but we keep hamstringing ourselves by conceding soft, sloppy and avoidable goals at the other end.
‘We are certainly unfortunate not to have scored many more than the one. We missed some clear cut chances, but it is the way we defend that is worrying me I have to say.’
The gaffer ended his interview by repeating what he’d just told the players in the dressing room, and ultimately that was that the only way we’ll eradicate this sloppiness at the back is by being back in on Monday and working twice as hard as we have done for the rest of the week so we can get it right against Peterborough.
After the game there are also ugly stories coming out about alleged racial abuse in the direction of a Chesterfield player. Investigations continue but Chairman Norman Smurthwaite has already committed to banning any individual found guilty of racism for life from the stadium.
