The former Vale winger Chris Birchall has been linked with a surprise return to the Potteries, although, contrary to reports, no deal has yet been concluded.

The 27 year old rose to prominence during his first spell at the club, making his debut under Brian Horton as a 17 year old after coming through the club`s youth ranks. Playing on the biggest stage of all at the 2006 World Cup for Trinidad and Tobago earned Birchall a £325,000 move to Coventry City, managed then by Micky Adams. A rather more exotic switch to the LA Galaxy followed, and he has just played a key role in Galaxy`s MLS winning season.

Despite reports that Birchall had signed, and would play for free, Vale boss Micky Adams told the Official Site these reports were premature. ‘I was surprised to read that Chris Birchall had signed because international clearance has not arrived and we are still to sort some other issues.

‘I also smiled to myself when I saw he was playing for free – because you don’t get anything for free in football!! Hopefully we can get something completed but we aren’t there yet.’
