This evening it was revealed that the sale of Leon Constantine to Barnsley for £125k plus Barnsley striker Marc Richards was off.

Vale boss Martin Foyle is saying the deal broke down at the Barnsley end due to personal terms offered to Leon, the Barnsley Chairman is saying that Leon’s terms were all agreed, the problem existed with Vale’s offer to Marc Richards.

Well, whatever the problem was the fact is we still have Leon Constantine.

The question now is what do we do with him? He clearly wants to be playing Championship football, but – unfortunately for him – he’s still with us playing Div.1 football.

Leon may have had some reservations joining Barnsley. They’re struggling in the Championship and may well find themselves back in Div.1 next season. Why would Constantine sign up to 18 months/2 years with a side who may be relegated in the summer?

His current situation with Vale is that his contract will end in the summer, and then he will be able to move wherever he pleased on a free. It would make sense for him to see the season out with Vale, bang in a few more goals, attract some more interest, then pick a championship club for the new season.

But whats in it for us? Port Vale? Is there a slim chance we could still make the play-offs with Constantine still in the team? I don’t think so. Even with Leon on fire we haven’t been consistent enough to get amongst the top six. If Leon doesn’t go this month then we lose him in the summer, and won’t collect a fee.

Before the new year Chairman Bill Bratt said the club would offer Leon a new contract in January. Lets get it tabled ASAP. Lets offer Leon another 18 month contract. If he’s not interested then lets just sell to the highest bidder. Forget the £250k and nothing less stance last week from the Chairman, lets take what we can now. £100k will buy us a new striker, why turn it down?

If Leon is still at Vale Park come the summer he’ll move up the ladder, and we won’t get a penny for it.

  • totally agree, we can’t afford to let him leave on a free – we have got to cash in on him. I don’t think he wants to be at Vale, he obviously was expecting to spend the rest of the season elsewhere, so lets get what we can for him.

  • Constantine and Rodgers up front, Akpo on the bench I reckon. Leon has got to want to stay at Vale why would he want to play anywhere else.
