A rampant Port Vale, with a 10-minute hat-trick among the goals, made it into the second round of the league cup.

Port Vale thrashed league 2 outfit Hartlepool United on Tuesday night at Vale Park, a Ben Williamson hat-trick was included in a 6-2 mauling!

Williamson (8) stuck early to give Vale the lead, following up a Ryan McGivern’s effort that was only parried by Hartlepool ‘keeper Scott Flinders.

Hartlepool were instantly level though when Jonathan Franks (10) scored with a 35-yard effort past Sam Johnson but the parity wasn’t long in lasting as Williamson (14) beat Flinders at his near post to make it two-one.

A 10-minutes hat-trick was completed by Williamson (18) when he headed home unmarked from a Chris Birchall cross with more goals threatened, but at was we had to be content with a three-one half time lead.

The visitors got back into the game just before the hour when a Chris Robertson foul on Sam Collins gave Hartlepool a penalty, which Neil Austin (59) converted but just minutes later Michael Brown (62), who had come off the bench, got something onto the end of Mark Marshall’s cross to score against one of his former sides.

Goal number five came from Tom Pope (74) as he was left with a simple tap-in after Flinders couldn’t hold Louis Dodds’ effort with Pope (84) completing a six-two win with a header from Chris Lines’ cross.

Vale can now look forward to this evenings second round draw.
