Vale defender John McCombe has left the club by today by ‘mutual consent`. The popular Yorkshireman joined the Vale from Hereford United in 2008 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club.

The central defensive positions have been a priority for Micky Adams following promotion to League One. With Darren Purse already departed and Liam Chilvers considering a new deal, some added pace and mobility is certainly required for the coming season. For all McCombe`s attributes there was concerns over his ability to make the step up a level and he now looks set to continue his career in League Two with Mansfield Town.

The Vale boss was fulsome in his praise for the 28 year old. Speaking to Official Site, Adams stated “John has been a model professional during his five years with Port Vale and it is with reluctance that we let him go.

“John leaves us on a high after helping us achieve promotion last season.

“He will be missed not only on the pitch but also in the changing room, where he has been a pivotal part of the squad. I am certain that all Port Vale fans will join me in wishing him well.”

We wish John all the best in his future career and thank him for his excellent service to the Valiants.
