Norman Smurthwaite has had plenty to say about Tom Pope’s contract situation recently, and what his future will be with the club.

Although he has insisted that a new deal WILL be offered to the Vale talisman….

He told BBC Radio Stoke: ‘I don’t want to lose Tom.

‘He’s a great kid. He’s a local boy and he’s a great ambassador of the area, and that’s down to Tom.

‘Ultimately, he’ll be offered a contract in the summer.’

Smurthwaite has made no secret of the fact that he feels the contract the 29-year-old is currently on is unsustainable saying that it was ‘disproportionate to what our turnover is and to our fan base’ and feels that former Vale chairman Paul Wildes ‘lumbered’ him and the club with his existing deal.

A new deal will be offered, but it’ll be on reduced terms so it’ll then be up to Pope to accept of decline, which all being well he’ll accept as what a loss he would be!

Rob Page is also keen to keep Pope but also knows that its ‘got to be right for both parties’ with it being his hope that ‘some common ground’ can be found to keep him at Vale Park.
