Vale continued their impressive pre-season form with a 6-0 win over Athlone Town in the first of their games in Ireland. Goals from Lee Hughes, Gavin Tomlin and a Tom Pope hat trick made it 19 goals in three matches this summer.

Boss Micky Adams was pleased with the workout, particularly the form shown by his strikers, though warned of some of the tougher tests that are to come. Speaking to The Sentinel the Vale boss said “They gave us a really good game in the first half and their movement was excellent.

“It was one of the best performances I’ve seen against us on an Ireland trip.

“We’ll come up against teams who move and change like that in our division this season, so we’ve got to find a solution for it.”

Vale will next play this Saturday against Bray Wanderers.
