Chairman Norman Smurthwaite has sounded a note of caution as the Valiants prepare for life in League One.

After a troubled few years, optimism and expectations were raised following the club`s promotion. Comments from then Chairman Paul Wildes led many supporters to believe that Vale would be aiming to challenge towards the top end of the division next season. However, comments from manager Micky Adams stating he would be operating with one of the lowest wage budgets in the league provided a more realistic assessment of Vale`s ambition.

Smurthwaite told the The Sentinel that supporters need to remain patient. “We’re going to get knocked about at times and fans will have to accept that.

“I’m under no illusions about what we’re facing and I hope they aren’t either.’

“Hopefully they’ll be as patient as I’m going to be with the manager and the players to see that, in the long term, we’re here to stay in the division and make progress.”

The club are hopeful that Captain Doug Loft will sign his contract offer this week, while Adams has revealed his is still in the market for 3 or 4 additional faces, with central midfield an obvious area to strengthen. Former midfielder Anthony Griffith could be one of those who the Vale boss looks to bring back to the Potteries.
