The unbeaten start to the season that Port Vale had been enjoying is over.

Notts County struggled last season but the early signs are that they won’t this time round as they became the first side to beat us when they won 2-0 at Vale Park on Saturday.

Veteran former Bradford City skipper Gary Jones (11) got Notts County off to a great start as he volley home from some 30-yards to score the only goal of the first half.

Northern Ireland, and former Manchester United, ‘keeper Roy Carroll was forced into a great save to keep out Tom Pope, who wasn’t able to add to his early season goals.

We pushed for an equaliser but Liam Noble’s (87) late freekick, he had gone close previously, that took a deflection secured the visitors a two-nil win.

It’s easy when you’re not losing, so how we react to this defeat will be interesting….
