Vale face a tough assignment in Round One of the Carling Cup after being drawn away to Neil Warnock’s Queens Park Rangers.

Rangers, who ended last season in 13th place in the Championship, will be aiming for a play-off spot at the very least after a year of managerial turmoil that saw Jim Magilton, Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham, Paul Hart and Mick Harford in the hot seat before Warnock took over in March.

Micky Adams will be hopeful of a positive result after disposing of both Sheffield clubs in last season’s campaign.

Vale’s last visit to Loftus Road in March 2004 ended in a dramatic defeat courtesy of a Jamie Cureton injury time goal. Steve Brooker and Adrian Littlejohn had netted for the Valiants.

The tie will take place the week beginning 9 August.
