Gavin Tomlin has been linked with a return to former club Southend United only a year after leaving the Shrimpers to join the Valiants.

Tomlin endured a difficult season with Vale. The striker was in and out of the side after a succession of injuries. He enjoyed his best spell around the turn of the year, when he scored five goals in five games. However, he struggled to maintain that form and now looks set to leave the club.

Vale were eyeing the former Walsall striker Craig Westcarr as his replacement, though he looks set to join League Two side Portsmouth. The 29 year old was surprisingly released by the Saddlers despite ending the season as their leading scorer with 16 goals.

Micky Adams now faces a tough ask in rebuilding a squad to which he initially must have hoped to add only 2 or 3 new faces.
