For sale, League 1 Football Club. One sole owner (two previous owners) sitting four-points from the play-off places but recently embarrassed in the FA Cup!

Norman Smurthwaite hasn’t held back with him left ‘humiliated’ as well as ‘ashamed’ and ’embarrassed’ by the defeat against League 2 side Exeter that made up his mind as to what his future will be with Port Vale.

Smurthwaite doesn’t feel he has a future with Vale as he’s confirmed the club is up for sale.

He told the BBC.

‘Officially from today (Monday), the club is up for sale. I just feel I’ve let the club down because I’ve tried to do everything myself, which meant cutting costs to put every available penny onto the pitch.

‘Clearly that must be wrong because yesterday, if the players had put the same amount of effort into playing as I do to finding the way to pay them every month, we’d have knocked that club for six.’

A sale isn’t needed, and he added he’ll not be selling to the first ones to make an approach, they’ll have to ‘tick the boxes’ to make sure they’ll be the right one(s) to take Vale forward in a way he no longer feels he can, or wishes to!

Before this announcement boss Rob Page, also speaking to the BBC, said Smurthwaite was ‘frustrated and rightly so’ but there wasn’t any problems between the pair and he didn’t fear for his job.

‘There are no problems there, we’ve had a lengthy chat and we move forward now and we have to put it right. It’s a cup competition that helps us financially – it was an opportunity to put a bit more money in the bank.

‘I understand the chairman’s concerns from that point of view and he’s got every right. If he sees a performance he’s not happy with he has a right to come and tell me about it – and I fully agree after that level of performance.’
