With Gary Speed almost certain to be named the new Wales manager, the search for the man to take his place at Bramall Lane is underway.

All Vale fans will fear that Adams, a self confessed, life- long Blades fan could be among those considered for the post. Sky Bet currently have the Vale boss as 10/1 on for the job, behind former Hull City boss Phil Brown and ex Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton, who interestingly has been linked with the vacant Blackburn Rovers job.

Quite whether Adams would be a serious contender remains to be seen. We caught up with the editor of Vital Sheffield United, and he cast some doubt as to whether the chances of the Vale boss switching to South Yorkshire were likely. “He’s liked by Blades fans but I can’t see him being a particularly popular choice, for the simple reason that most fans believe we’re bigger than that.

“Personally I don’t think we are, and he seems to be doing a pretty good job this year. I don’t think he would be offered it for the simple reason, he’s with a club, and we won’t want to be paying compo.

“It’s a horrible job to come into and his experience would be welcomed, and to be honest he’s in a similar position to what Warnock was when we had him”.

All of which will be music to the ears of all Vale supporters. Adams would be hard pushed to walk out on his current job at the Vale however. After all, another promotion to add to his CV would no doubt impress potential suitors even more, though the popular Yorkshireman has made no secret of his desire to one day manage his boyhood club.

Lets hope that day doesn`t come just yet.
