Adams Threatens To Quit After Vale Defeat

Following the Valiants` abject collapse at Bristol City last night, manager Micky Adams has threatened to walk away from the club.

Adams was involved in an ugly spat with a handful of supporters who were unhappy following Vale`s 5-0 defeat at Ashton Gate. Denying his comments were an emotional over-reaction, the Vale boss revealed he had been considering his future for some time.

Adams told The Sentinelafter the match, “I think supporters who pay good money to go and watch their team, whether it be home or away, have a right to be disappointed when they see their team don`t turn up. And I feel disappointed for them.

“But if you go on the football circuit they say how well we have done, the real football people. That`s not to say we haven`t got knowledgeable football fans because we have.

“But some of the abuse at the end there was way over the top. I have to say I have to question my future at the club because of it.

“I think it was disgusting. As I have said before, I will leave my future to the end of the season, but certainly it is up in the air at the moment, the way I feel.”

However, it is unclear whether or not there is even a future to consider. Despite the continual protestations of Chairman Norman Smurthwaite, Adams has yet to be offered a fresh deal. It can only be hoped, that should there be a parting of the ways, the fans aren`t used as a convenient scapegoat by both parties as this is evidently untrue. The Chairman needs to put up or shut up with regard to the contract issue. As for Adams, it is hard to imagine a man of his experience being as sensitive to the criticism of a handful of individuals. Most would acknowledge the fine job he has done on his return to the club, and should he leave this summer, he would undoubtedly be a hard act to follow.
As for the game itself, it was evenly poised until Vale suffered a calamitous period before the break, conceding three times in four minutes. Things improved only marginally after the break. For all his whole-hearted efforts, Carl Dickinson`s discipline let him down again as he was booked twice inside the space of a minute, leaving Vale to play out the final 25 minutes with ten men. The defeat leaves Vale without an away win in the League since October.
