There is little real transfer activity to speak off at present, with players and managers away on holiday, so it comes down to the role of the good old football agent to keep their clients` names in the media spotlight in their absence.

The latest player to be linked with a summer switch to the Potteries is the Macclesfield Town defender Thierry Audel. The 26 year old Frenchman started his career with Auxerre, travelling around the lower reaches of Italian Football before ending up in Cheshire, where he signed for the Blue Square Conference side this January. Audel is said to have impressed Vale during a behind doors fixture between the sides earlier in the year. However, all the speculation has come from the players agent, Colin Brown, not the club themselves. Speaking to The Sentinel, Brown claimed: “Port Vale have been showing a strong interest in Thierry since that game.

“They were asking about him before the end of the season and they have been in touch again.

“But they’re not the only ones who’d like to sign him.

“Crewe Alexandra have watched him two or three times and they are also interested, while we’ve had contact from Notts County and Luton Town too.”

Describing his client as a cross between Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, the only surprise is that Manchester United boss David Moyes isn`t on his trail as well.

There is little doubt Micky Adams will be keen on adding at least one central defender to his squad following the departures of Darren Purse, Clayton McDonald and John McCombe, but whether there is any semblance of truth in this rumour will soon be clear.
