Vale`s hopes of a return to League One were handed a significant boost last week after influential midfielder Gary Roberts extended his stay at Vale Park until the end of the season. Roberts, 23, has displayed the sort of talent that had been previously evident in his spells at Crewe, Yeovil and Rotherham, before a series of off field distractions disrupted his progress.

During his short spell in the Potteries, Roberts has provided the creativity sadly lack from the Vale over recent years, impressing supporters and, crucially, boss Micky Adams. Adams had no hesitation in offering Roberts an improved deal, and although he missed out on Vale`s win at Macclesfield on Saturday after accumulating his fifth booking of the campaign, he is sure to play a key role in Vale`s hopes for the rest of the season.
