With rumours abounding in recent months that star defender Lee Collins was set for a move away from Vale Park, news that boss Micky Adams could open contract talks with the Telford born player is a major boost. Assistant boss Geoff Horsfield told The Sentinel newspaper that retaining the services of Collins would be crucial. ‘Lee is a fantastic player, an athlete who has come on in leaps and bounds over the last 12 months. We don`t want to lose Lee because he`s a vital part of our defence and a good lad`.

The 21 year old former Wolves trainee, who is out of contract at the end of the season, would command a fee as he is under the age of 24. However, should Collins extend his stay, Vale would be in a much stronger bargaining position when the bigger clubs inevitably come calling. In recent seasons, Vale have struggled to hold on to key players, though the last few months have seen all key out of contract squad members sign new deals, including last season`s top scorer Marc Richards turning down more lucrative deals to remain at Vale Park.
