Manager Micky Adams has informed The Sentinel that former player and Legend Gareth Ainsworth is short-listed to become player-coach at Vale Park.
Ainsworth, now 36, arrived at Vale Park in September 1997 from Lincoln City, Rudgie forking out half-a-million for the emerging talent. Ainsworth became an instant legend, the winger playing 59 games in his 13 months with us and scoring 11 goals.
Ainsworth then moved to Wimbledon for £2,000,000.
Adams told The Sentinel this:
‘Nothing has been decided yet. There have been a lot of people express an interest in the position, but it will be up to me to decide who will fill it. Ainsworth is one of a number of people I could be speaking to next week.’
Ainsworth is currently at QPR, and has another twelve months left on his contract, but its understood that the Londoners wouldn’t make a nuisance of themselves if Ainsworth does fancy the gig.

It would be fantastic if we can get him back, and it will definitely get some more season tickets sold! Dunner think much of his band though! Get a haircut mate.
He’s definitely a better footballer than singer! I’d love to see him back at Vale Park, he still has the quality to cope in this league and he also did ok as caretaker boss at QPR.
A true class act when he was with us back in the ’90’s and I would love to see him back at Vale Park and as paddockboy says he would help flog a few more season tickets.
