What’s Up With Shrewsbury Fans?

Shrewsbury Town 0-1 Port Vale

For the second successive season I have been truly appalled by the behaviour of a small section of Shrewsbury fans at The Prostar Stadium.

We all know the ones I’m on about. They sit just to the right of the ‘away’ end. Goodness me, what an ill-tempered rabble of confused freaks these people are! Their reaction to the good natured celebrations of the Vale faithful was, once again, frankly disgusting. John McCombe’s goal on the stroke of half-time was met with a stream of venom, bile, meat pies and plastic bottles. All aimed towards us Vale fans. Stewards struggled to contain this irate horde as they made a futile attempt to hurdle the advertising boards and engage in confrontation.

The full-time whistle provoked more of the same, stewards and police kept busy by the rabid natives, who clearly took offence at the gentle teasing politely served up by some of the Vale faithful. ‘Perspective’ is patently a word that our salopian friends have no understanding of.

It didn’t get any better outside the ground. The police had little option but to escort a small group of us back to the station, even sorting us out a coach after walking us half way back. As one Officer of the law put it ‘We are saving you from getting a clattering in town.’ Naturally I was shocked! I’d always understood the people of Shropshire to be gentle, simple folk, whose only misdemeanour is an over-fondness for the livestock they tend. I’m obviously a little naive. With the coach winding it’s way through the streets of Shrewsbury we were subjected to the peculiar sight of alarmingly odd-looking people staring and pointing at us, like some nightmarish urban version of ‘The Hills Have Eyes’. A chilling experience.
