Port Vale go into the 4th round of The Carling Cup for the first time in their history after defeating Norwich City on penalties.

This absorbing Cup tie ended 0-0 after extra-time, Vale holding their nerve to win 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out.

The Valiants more than matched their Championship opponents over 90 minutes, creating countless chances and perfoming heroically all over the pitch.

Norwich had their chances in extra-time. With Vale looking dead on their feet after the commitment and work rate they had put in during normal time Norwich created three gilt edged opportunities – but failed to find the net.

Paul Harsley, Danny Whittaker and Jeff Smith all converted from the penalty spot – Smith scoring the decisive goal.

Full match report will follow tomorrow morning.
