Port Vale’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy involvement is over for another year after a 3-2 defeat at Deepdale against league 1 rivals Preston North End on Tuesday night.

Chris Humphrey (13) who beat Chris Neal early on to give Preston a lead, which could have been added to with several chances missed by the home side to extend this lead, that stood at just one-nil at the break.

Shortly after the break Tom Pope (51) heading in a Chris Lines freekick to make it one-one and make Preston pay for those missed chances.

After John Welsh went close Joe Garner (63) did put the home side ahead again when he chipped past Neal just past the hour with Paul Gallagher (69) left to tap home just minutes later to make it three-one.

Pope (89) headed home in the last minute to give us slight hope but it was too little to late with that consolation unable to prevent us from bowing out of the JPT after a three-two defeat.
