Rocastle promises goals

New signing Craig Rocastle has promised that goals are his priority in an interview with ‘The Sentinel’.

The 25-year-old midfielder scored a modest three goals for Oldham last season in his 19 starts, but is determined to prove himself a scoring midfielder in the new season.

Rocastle also offers some positive opinions on new winger and ex-Oldham teammate Paul Edwards and expects the 27-year-old left winger to make a big impact in his first season at Vale Park.

Rocastle goes on to make the obligatory ‘big up’s’ to his new manager Martin Foyle.

Casting aside the usual footballer’s rhetoric I have to say that I’m hoping for big things from both Rocastle and Edwards. Whether Rocastle proves to be a useful goal scorer or not we desperately need a central midfielder who can carry the ball and spring Vale into attack. Foyle described Rocastle as a ‘box to box player’ back in May, and if he can live up to that that he will be a huge positive to the team.

With Edwards in the squad along with Shane Tudor we should see football from our midfield that is far more adventurous than last seasons often plodding and clueless approach.

We’ll certainly be stringer in midfield, but will Richards and Rogers convert as many chances as Leon?

Rocastle and Edwards are two good signings, and I reckon Richards, Sodje and Rodgers will give us plenty of goals. The only question mark (IMO) is the defence. Will we leak goals like we did last season? I don’t think we look any stronger in that department, although I really know nothing about Keith Lowe.
